The following is a rough translation of an extract form Hz Wasif Ali Wasif’s essay Sahib-e-Haal (a realized individual)from his collection of essays called Dil Darya Samunder. This is a beautifully written book in Urdu by a near contemporary Sufi from Lahore. It can be read online here.
” The detractors apply the formula; apply the law and general principles but the sahib-e-haal is outside of formulas. The fatwa was against Iqbal whilst Destiny was anointing his eyes with the dust of Madina and Najaf; he was given knowledge of secrets; he was made a dervesh and a qalander. He became a caller to goodness and became part of the scattered dust along the road to the Hijaz. The muftis remained against him but Destiny was on his side. Iqbal’s entry to the ranks of the people of realization prevented his detractors from becoming realized themselves. These are the decisions of that “glance”, the miracles of Its bestowal; a man’s action may be in one direction but Grace leads him somewhere else. What can we know? what can we understand?”
I like this quote because it reminds me that nothing is absolute except the Absolute. All rules, teachings and principles are relative and are for our benefit. However since humans have a tendency to forget this fact, every now and then the Absolute reminds us through such bestowals of Grace. “And He is the dominating over His servants and the Most Subtle, Most Aware.”
