The master, Hz Khadim-e-Mohabbat, departed from this realm on the 12th of December 1988. Thus today is the twentieth anniversary of his passing. In accordance with sufi custom his Urs is celebrated every year at his tomb in Jhelum, Pakistan. What can a poor lowly beggar offer to a King? These words of Hz Mawlana Rumi (ra), to whom the master was much devoted convey something of that helplessness.
I stand at the door of mysteries
you are light
you are festival
you are fortune, God-confirmed
you’re the bird of Mount Sinai
I the wounded captive in your beak.
I can do no better than to reming myself and others of the teaching of the master which is summed up in these words of his: ” It is better to have knowledge of Love than to have love of knowledge”.
or mathnawi 1:88:
“Ei mera tu Mustapha, mann choon umar
az barai khidmatat bandam kamar”
O thou who art to me like Mustapha(s), whilst i like umar will gird my loins to do thee service
I hope we all find Masters like this!
In Your Lane
In his time before Mawlana, Shamsi Tabriz had a student of his who was so gripped in love of his master that he shunned his parents and sat all day long with his head buried in his knees.
M.Shams listened at the door to hear what He had to say, and heard this quatrain (excuse the inaccurate transliteration but it helps the English nonetheless):
“Dar ku-e tu aashiqaan fazayand-u ronad
khoon-e jigar az deeda gashayand-u ronad
mann barr dar-e tu muqim baadaam choo-e khaaq
war-na digaraan choo baad aayand-u ronad”
“In your lane, lovers come and go.
liver’s blood flows from their eyes-and they go!
I though dwell at your door always, like dirt.
others come and go like the wind!”
When m.Shams asked him to repeat it, he refused or wasn’t able. He died aged 18. Mawlana heard this from m.Shams and included it in the Diwan.
(Me and Rumi- W.Chittick 1.13
Ruba’i: 731- Diwan-i Shamsi)
” It is better to have knowledge of Love than to have love of knowledge”.
May Allah bless his soul and raise him to the ranks of His beloveds. Amin.
Master Hazrat Khadim-e-Mohabbat summed up the path in those words.
Ya Haqq!
